Risks Associated With Jet Ski Use

Riding a Jet Ski or a similar personal watercraft can be an exhilarating experience, provided the vessel is used properly and operated in a safe manner.

Unfortunately, the use of a Jet Ski or any personal watercraft also comes with an inherent risk of serious injury or even death.
Jet ski risks are greatly increased when an operator is not properly trained in boating safety or watercraft rules and regulations.

Another primary safety concern pertains to inexperienced Jet Ski drivers who might not be accustomed to operating the vessel or have familiarity with water safety protocol. Drivers that are too young or lacking in proper boater safety training also pose a significant danger.

In a JetSki.com story about Jet Ski safety, Cortland Ray, vice president for insurance claims for The Automobile Club of Southern California, said “people can get caught up in the fun and excitement of water activities and forget to put safety first.”

Special considerations for operating a personal watercraft and preventing Jet Ski accidents include:
  • Do not operate or ride a Jet Ski under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
  • Do not ride on a Jet Ski with someone who is intoxicated.
  • Minimize distractions while operating a Jet Ski.
  • Stay alert for other watercraft, boats and swimmers.
  • Practice routine maintenance on the Jet Ski, checking for cracks in the battery, loose wires or similar mechanical failings that could affect the safety of the vessel.
  • Do not exceed the Jet Ski’s capacity or weight limit.
  • Check with your medical insurance provider to see if Jet Ski accidents are covered in your policy.
  • Follow posted and prescribed speed limits.
  • Wear a life vest when operating a Jet Ski.
  • Steer clear of the shoreline.
In some cases, Jet Skis and similar watercrafts are responsible for a disproportionate number of accidents, as compared to boats and other vessels. If you have been involved in a boating accident, it is imperative to contact a boating accident attorney to make sure you receive the help you need to have a solid case for your claim.
